College of Life Science & College of Biotechnology


With years of development, School of Life Science grew out of Department of Biology which was founded in 1950 and one of a few departments established in the earliest period of Southwest Normal University and was finally set up in 1999. At present, School of Life Science offers such two undergraduate programs as Biology Science and Biological Engineering. The school has 80 faculties, among whom 17 are professors and researchers, 19 are associate professors and associate researchers, 20 have obtained doctor’s degrees and 19 have obtained master’s degrees. There are currently more than 1,300 enrolled students, among whom over 200 students are doctor’s degree and master’s degree candidates, and over 1,100 are undergraduates.

The school boasts the first-level disciplines offering doctor’s degree of Biology and Aquiculture, and the first-level disciplines offering master’s degree of Biology and Microbiology and Biochemical Pharmacy. In addition, it has the key laboratory of Ministry of Education in Ecological Environment of Three Gorges Dam Region, the Chongqing Municipal key laboratory in Fishery Science and two key laboratories of Chongqing Universities in Fishery Science and Technology and Plant Ecology and Resources in Three Gorges Dam Region.

In recent years, the school has won a hundred scientific research projects, including state and ministerial projects, National Natural Science Foundation projects, support plan, 863 Plan, 973 Project, etc., and published over 500 papers, more than 10 books and teaching materials. It has earned nearly 10 awards from the state, the province, and ministries.

The school has also conducted academic exchanges, established scientific & technological cooperation and carried out student exchange programs with universities and research institutes in more than 10 nations and regions. Scholars at home and abroad pay visits to the school for academic exchanges throughout the year.

The school attaches great importance to students’ overall development and makes efforts to create favorable learning environment. It has Chongqing Municipal Life Science Teaching Demonstration Center, and Museum of Natural History which is the state popular science education base. Furthermore, the school has forged cooperation with Queen’s University, Canada and St. John's University, USA, exchanged students for short-term visits, and set up investigation teams, etc. Our students won the first prize in national and Chongqing Municipal competitions in the Ninth Challenge Cup in 2005. Now, students and faculties in the school are doing their own shares with great enthusiasm for the school’s rapid development in scientific research, talent cultivation, and scientific and technological industrialization and more brilliant future.
